Can non-Hindus visit Pashupatinath Temple? +
Non-Hindu visitors are warmly welcome to the Pashupatinath complex, including the ghats, gardens, and surrounding shrines. However, the main sanctum is restricted to Hindus only. Visitors of all backgrounds may observe the evening Aarti from the eastern bank of the Bagmati.
How do I book a Puja at Pashupatinath? +
Puja bookings can be made in person at the Puja Booking Office inside the complex, or by calling 01-4471246 during office hours (Sunday–Friday, 10 AM – 5 PM). Specific pujas such as Rudrabhishek, Mahabhishek, and Laghurudra are available at published rates.
What is the Kiryaputri service? +
Kiryaputri is the ritual cremation and last-rite service at the Arya Ghat on the banks of the Bagmati River. PADT manages this sacred service, available 24 hours a day. Please call the emergency hotline 01-4472305 for immediate assistance.
What are the temple opening hours? +
The main temple opens at 4:00 AM and closes at 9:00 PM daily. Puja timings vary throughout the day, starting with the Pratakalin Puja at 4:00 AM and the Shayan Puja at 7:30 PM.
Is photography permitted inside the temple? +
Photography is strictly prohibited inside the main sanctum and during religious ceremonies. Visitors may photograph the exterior, ghats, and public areas respectfully. Drone photography requires prior written permission from PADT.
How can I make a donation to PADT? +
Donations can be made via bank transfer to official accounts at Rastriya Banijya Bank or Nepal Investment Bank. Online donation forms are also available on this page. All donations receive an official receipt and may qualify for tax exemption.
What is the dress code for visiting the temple? +
Modest and traditional dress is required. Shorts, sleeveless tops, and western casual wear are not permitted on temple grounds. Shoes must be removed before entering any shrine.
How do I reach Pashupatinath from Kathmandu city? +
From Thamel: approximately 15–20 minutes by taxi. By public bus, routes 11, 22, and 30 stop at Gaushala — a 5-minute walk from the temple entrance. The nearest landmark is Gaushala Chowk in the Chabahil area.
